Noshings

let’s state the obvious … we all eat. we all have to eat, and some of us (namely, me) enjoy doing it more than others. you know the cliche: eat to live, live to eat.

i guess the question is: how do we go about doing it? if you’ve somehow worked out an arrangement to still be living with mum, you may be lucky enough to be eating at the dinner table. food off a plate. if your mum’s a good cook, then there’s a good chance you’re not just scarfing down dinner… you could very well be dining 5 nights a week. we are all jealous, by the way.

but the more likely situation is that if you’re in college and squatting in student quarters, you’re probably eating out of boxes. or cans. mr.noodle foam cups. my brother eats straight from the pot.

then we graduate and find ourselves as 20 or 30-somethings coming to grips with adulthood, chasing after career, proudly paying our bills. but we’re secretly embarrassed by the contents of our refrigerator. the eat out, or eat out of a box debate runs through our head after a long day at work. since when did our eating occasions become all or nothing at all?

but it shouldn’t be like that, should it? because there are gajillion blogs out there giving us tips, meal solutions, plans…but how many times in scanning recipes have we subconsiously registered the “deal breaker” - that is, when recipes assume we know what to do with verbs like flash fry, truss, sear, sous-vide. Recipes that call for a deep fryer, pressure cooker, rise for 24 hours, thaw for 2 days, or serves 8 but you live alone. or simply, the food looks like it should be something fuddy duddy mummy cooks for her 5 kids in rural timbuktu…recall jello with grated carrot and marshmallows. or perhaps we’re just not that into rachel ray.

there’s a gap somewhere. we’re educated but are afraid of putting an oiled pan on high heat and searing chicken. we sport designer purses and eat mac n cheese out of a box. we are fearless movers and shakers in our career life but are terrified of buying meat in its animal form and putting it in the oven.

nosh on this for a second:
what if we could actually eat what we cook, or cook what we want to eat.
we could enjoy cooking for what it is … what starts out as just a basic life skill could lead us into discovering the endless possibilities of all things edible.

Gen Y’ers, i say we get back to calling shots when it comes to eating. and while we love for it to be kept simple, there’s no reason for us to be condescending to ourselves and dumb this whole thing down.

and for those of you who have one - let’s start putting that $10K stainless steel kitchen to good use.
